Sprint Service
This GPS-enabled phone provides optional access to Sprint Navigation for driving directions on your mobile phone–by voice and onscreen. Along the way, turn-by-turn directions will be announced in a clear voice and displayed on your phone. For example, Sprint Navigation will say, “Go 1.2 miles and turn right on Elm Street.” As you approach the turn, you will hear, “Turn right on Elm Street.” Sprint Navigation also provides proactive traffic alerts with one click re-routing. And it’s easy to find restaurants, banks, cafes, hotels and more from over 10 million points of interest across the U.S.
Sprint Vision provides innovative wireless services like web access and email and text messaging capabilities. Plus, with the Sprint National Network, you get the nationwide coverage and excellent voice clarity. The Restrict and Lock function allows the user to restrict calls and limit access to Vision services–valuable for parents or business managers. For instance, you can restrict incoming and outgoing calls to only those numbers held in the internal phonebook, lock the camera and any pictures saved in the phone, and provides up to three “special numbers” that are always available.
Phone Features
Curvier with rounder edges than the other models in Sanyo’s Katana line, the Katana LX is highlighted by the unique external OLED display that glows through the mirrored-finish and completely disappears when not in use. It displays current time/date, signal strength and battery life–but not caller ID–and it also provides whimsical, short animation clips for added fun. The internal 2-inch display has a 128 x 160-pixel resolution and 65K color depth. Below the screen you’ll find a circular five-way navigation pad that’s complemented by a round frame of buttons, including a dedicated camera key, back button, and two soft navigation keys. The send/end and dedicated speakerphone keys reside between the navigation area and and the alpha-numeric keypad.
 |
The phone has a small 7 MB internal memory, which cannot be expanded. The phonebook provides a total of 300 contact entries, with the capability of saving up to 500 total phone numbers and 600 email and 300 Web addresses. Other features include a speed dial list of up to 98 numbers and a call history of the most recent 60 outgoing/received/missed calls.
Handsfree communication is easy thanks to the integrated speakerphone. This phone also provides Bluetooth wireless connectivity (version 2.0), and includes profiles for communication headset, handsfree car kits, and file transfer. You can connect your laptop via Bluetooth and enjoy dial-up networking–surf the Internet, send email, and access files from a server (requires Phone As Modem Service Plan).
The VGA camera can capture still images up to 640 x 480 pixels (with additional resolution options for 320 x 240 and 160 x 120 pixels), but it does not record video clips. Other camera features include a digital zoom of up to 16x, three quality settings, five picture modes (Normal, Beach/Snow, Scenery, Night/Dark, Soft Focus), brightness controls, multi-shot capabilities, multiple shutter sounds (including silent mode), and a self-timer. Once a picture is snapped, you can snazz it up with a variety of fun frames and play with the color tone.
Other features include:
- Wireless Backup to manage contacts list in the event that the phone is lost, stolen or damaged

Phone Features
The Z310a’s 65,000-color, 128 x 160 display is housed under the front cover while the semi-transparent front of the clamshell sports a hidden display (measuring 96 x 64 pixels in monochrome) that can display time, caller information, and more. Located just above the outer display are unique disappearing backlit indicator icons that indicate battery and signal strength, message status, and multimedia status. The indicators fade away when not in use, leaving the phone’s outer interface clean and sleek looking. The handset’s VGA camera is housed on the front cover as well, just above the indicator icons. The Z310a uses an internal antenna–leaving nothing to snag or break off–and a five-way button just above the dial pad is used to control most of the phone’s menus and features. Up/down buttons on the left side of the phone can be used for quick volume control and menu navigation. USB data and charging ports, as well as a headset port, are located on the phone’s bottom edge.
The cover includes a monochrome display as well as backlit indicator icons that show battery and signal strength, message status, and multimedia status. |
The Z310a’s call list remembers most of your recent missed, received, and dialed calls. The phone also features a speakerphone for easy, hands-free talking. In addition to a vibrating alert, the phone supports polyphonic ringtones as well as MP3- and AAC-format ringers, allowing you to use portions of your favorite songs to alert you to incoming calls. There’s even a bundled application that lets you mix your own ringtones with up to 16 tracks. Picture caller ID lets you assign a photo to specific callers. Similarly, a ringer ID lets you assign ringtones to callers. Lastly, the phone also comes with conference call capabilities–an ideal feature for both business and leisure applications.
Because the Z310a is Bluetooth enabled, wireless communication headsets can be configured with the phone for total hands-free operation.
The phone comes with a built-in email client with support for POP3 and IMAP4 protocols, while the included Access NetFront Web Browser allows you to surf full HTML web sites. It also supports RSS feeds, allowing you to use your phone to view up-to-the-minute news and other content from selected Web sites and blogs. Just subscribe to the feed and let it come to you. AT&T Service
This AT&T phone can handle high-speed data connectivity via AT&T’s 3G mobile broadband data network, which is available in most major metropolitan areas. The AT&T 3G network uses the UMTS 850/1900 network (also known as UMTS/HSDPA), making it possible to enjoy a variety of feature-rich wireless multimedia services with speeds up to 3.6 Mbps. It also gives AT&T the advantage of offering simultaneous voice and data services.
In areas where the 3G network is not available, you’ll continue to receive service on the AT&T EDGE network, which offers availability in more than 13,000 US cities and along some 40,000 miles of major highways. Providing average data speeds between 75-135Kbps, it’s fast enough to support a wide range of advanced data services, including video and music clips, full picture and video messaging, high-speed color Internet access, and email on the go.
You get access to AT&T Mobile Music, which enables you to buy tracks while on the go, access the Napster and eMusic subscription music services, stream music video, discover what’s playing with Music ID song-recognition software, and find out what’s hot with The Buzz music news portal.
This phone is also enabled with mSpot’s Make-UR-Tones application (subscription required), which allows you to easily create a ringtone from your favorite part of a song directly on your phone. To use the application, use the application’s search engine to select a song and then cut the part of the song you want to customize as their ringtone–up to 30 seconds–by using the easy-to-use waveform editor. Make-UR-Tones subscribers can enjoy exclusive access to more than 250,000 titles from music labels EMI Music, Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, INgrooves and IRIS.
The phone is also packed with multimedia streaming and download capabilities. AT&T’s Cellular Video (CV) service features content from CNN, The Weather Channel, iFilm, Comedy Central and exclusive premium content from HBO and much more. And it has a built-in web browser for MEdia Net downloads and mobile web browsing. AT&T’s MEdia Net service enables you to receive and send emails, read news headlines, get weather updates, download games and ringtones, and more.
Note that if you want to enjoy the full audio and video capabilities of your UMTS phone, be sure to select a MEdia Max service plan option during checkout. If you do not sign up for a MEdia Max service plan option, you will be paying per KB when you use the over-the-air UMTS audio and video features on your phone (upwards of $10 per minute).
Ultra-compact at just 0.58 inches thin. |
Phone Features
At 0.58 inches thick, the RAZR V3xx is virtually the same thickness as the original RAZR. And like the original RAZR, the phone’s design takes the standard clamshell form factor to the next level with an impressive, fully-anodized aluminum construction, and 60 MB of internal memory. A large 240 x 320 color display with over 262,000 colors dominates the inside of the top cover, while the outside cover of the handset sports a supplementary 96 x 80 full-color display that can display caller ID pictures, time, call information, battery and signal strength, and more. The integrated VGA and 1.30-megapixel digital camera is housed above this display. Use the VGA camera for live two-way video calls at up to 15 frames per second. Up/down buttons are placed on the left side for volume control, as well as the camera button and mini-USB port.
Most of the phone’s features and on-screen menus are controlled by a five-way center button on the handset’s backlit control pad, which is precision cut from a single sheet of nickel-plated copper alloy. A mini-USB port is provided, which, while useful for fast data transfer, can also be used with compatible USB stereo headsets. Note that the phone does not have a standard 2.5mm headset jack. Lastly, a charging port is placed on the bottom of the phone, and an unobtrusive internal antenna is safely tucked away, keeping the phone’s design compact and portable.
The RAZR V3xx’s internal phone book can hold up to 1000 contacts while the phone’s picture ID system allows you to assign pictures to your most common callers. The phone also supports polyphonic ringtones as well as MP3 ringers, allowing you to use portions of your favorite songs to alert you to incoming calls. For times when you want to be discreet, there’s a vibrating alert. A built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear while voice activated dialing makes calling your friends, family and associates as easy as saying their names. Speaker-independent technology allows any speaker to dial numbers with the voice dialing system. And because the RAZR V3xx is Bluetooth enabled, wireless headsets for calling, and even wireless stereo headsets for music can be configured with the phone for total handsfree operation.
The RAZR V3xx is a messaging and wireless Internet powerhouse. With the 3G HSDPA technology, the RAZR V3xx delivers broadband-like speeds for downloading, Web browsing, and data exchange. Support is built in for sending and receiving pictures, text, graphics, sound and video via messages. When used in combination with the phone’s built-in still and video camera, MMS opens up a whole new world of messaging fun. iTap text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit–a plus for mobile email and text messaging users.
There’s also a built-in web browser for MEdia Net downloads and mobile web browsing. Getting on the Internet is easy with the V3xx. When used with a AT&T data plan and the phone’s Bluetooth or USB data capability, the phone can be used as a wireless modem for laptops and PDAs.
The RAZR V3xx’s integrated 1.3-megapixel camera includes an 8x digital zoom and offers a choice of capturing digital stills in four resolution settings. Other features include settings for six lighting conditions, seven color effects, self timer, and multiple shutter sounds (including silent option). You can also record video up to VGA resolution (640 x 480 pixels). Clips for sending via MMS are capped at 16 seconds, while you can let the video record as long as you have space available on your optional MicroSD memory card for saving to your PC.
A number of handy software tools are bundled with the V3xx including a calculator with currency converter, a calendar and an alarm clock. The phone can also be used with Motorola’s Mobile Phone Tools PC application to manage and synchronize contacts, calendar and other data with your PC. The phone also sports an airplane mode feature, which allows the user to safely use the non-wireless functions of a phone (such as music, games, or organizer functions) on an airplane during flight.
Other features include:
- Memory expansion: MicroSD (up to 4 GB)

The V Cast Music service enables you to download songs instantly to your phone, or purchase music through your PC and transfer the files to your phone. If purchased from your phone, you’ll receive two copies of the song: a Windows Media Audio Pro Plus format at 64Kbps stereo is sent to your phone, and a Windows Media Audio 9 format at 160Kbps stereo is sent to your account in the V CAST Music online store for downloading to your PC. V Cast Music offers nearly 2 million songs, with more being added all the time.
In addition to the V Cast Music service, this phone is also compatible with the Verizon Wireless V CAST Music with Rhapsody, which enables you to access this exclusive digital music service for RealNetworks and for MTV Networks. After defining a zone, such as an area designating a school or summer camp, you’ll be sent an alert via text message when the Chaperone handset enters or leaves the zone.
Getting on the Internet is easy using the Verizon Wireless Mobile Web 2.0 package, which allows you to read and send e-mails, exchange instant messages and view your favorite web content on your phone. Additionally, the Versa is compatible with the Mobile Broadband Connect service, allowing you to use the phone as a modem for your laptop.
You can personalize your LG Versa phones based on your messaging needs–either attach the optional QWERTY keypad to the phone or leave the keypad at home (see larger image). |
The 3-inch touchscreen offers tactile feedback and a built-in accelerometer rotates the screen automatically (see larger image). |
Other features include a 2-megapixel camera/camcorder, multi-format digital audio player, Bluetooth 2.1 connectivity for handsfree devices and stereo music streaming, MicroSD memory expansion (up to 16 GB), a full HTML browser with support for Flash and RSS feeds, Visual Voicemail, and up to 4.8 hours of talk time.
Verizon Wireless Service
With support for the EV-DO high-speed data standard, you’ll enjoy fast access to the Internet and Verizon Wireless multimedia services (additional charges applicable), with average download speeds ranging from 400 to 700 Kbps and peak rates up to 2 Mbps. (Learn more about where EV-DO coverage is offered.) The V Cast Music service enables you to download songs instantly to your phone, or purchase music through your PC and transfer the files to your phone.
V CAST Music with Rhapsody delivers unlimited monthly access to music on up to three Rhapsody-compatible mobile phones and players and online on multiple PCs and Web browsers. In addition, customers who purchase music over-the-air are able to download the master copy of the songs or albums to their PCs free of digital rights management (DRM) software that restricts how and where music can be played.
With this GPS-enabled phone, you’ll be able to access the Verizon Wireless VZ Navigator service (additional charges applicable) for voice-prompted turn-by-turn directions, heads-up alerts, local search of nearly 14 million points of interest in the US (such as landmarks, restaurants and ATMs), and detailed color maps. And the Chaperone service lets you easily locate your loved ones from your Verizon Wireless phone or PC in real time.
The Verizon Wireless Media Center wireless download service is also fully compatible with this phone. This pay-per-download service features application downloads, games and productivity tools. You can also personalize your handset with ringtone downloads using the Media Center service.
With BroadbandAccess Connect (subscription required), you can use your smartphone as a modem for your notebook when you connect the two using a USB cable–or open a Bluetooth connection–enabling you to access the Internet or your company intranet. The tethered modem capability is ideal when you’re traveling and need to use your notebook to check email, access corporate networks, or download large files like presentations and reports. And with BroadbandAccess Connect, you won’t have to buy an extra PC Card or other devices.
